The patients and families at the IWK are brave—they are fighters—and it’s our job to help ensure they have access to world-class care when they need it most.
I've become an IWK Radiothon Warrior again this year so that I can stand by those families that need the IWK. Please help me reach my fundraising goal in time for the IWK Radiothon broadcast on Maritime Bell Media radio stations on March 24, 2023.
On January 22, 2020 my teacher noticed that I was really disoriented in class and called my mom to come see how I was doing. Thankfully my mom worked at my school and was able to come check on me right away. I really just wanted to go home and take a nap but my mom insisted that we go to the IWK to check in before heading home. As soon as we arrived at the Emergency Room they rushed me back to their trama room where many doctors came rushing in to help and get me connected to an IV drip to start pumping fluids and insulin into my body. They knew right away that I was in a state of DKA and diagnosed me with Type 1 Diabetes. We stayed at the IWK for several days while they tried to get my sugars under control and helped me to learn all of the things I needed to know to be able to live with my new diagnosis. It isn't easy but with the support of the diabetes clinic and team at the IWK I have been able to adjust to my new normal.
About a week after I was realeased from the hospital I heard an advertisement on the radio for the Warriors Telethon and immediately decided to sign up so that I could do something to give back to the IWK so that they would be able to continue help other kids like they were able to help me. This will be my fourth year as one of the 100 Warriors for the Kids raising money by collecting bottles and other donations.
Your donation will support the most urgent care needs at the IWK, and make a tremendous difference in the lives of Maritime patients and their families. You can donate online here or drop off a donation of refundable bottles to my account at the Canadian Recycling Centre in Dartmouth at 365 Portland St. Just let them know the bottles are for Ethan's Account!
As the Maritime region's leading health care and research centre, IWK Health cares for a population of over two million women, children, youth and families throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI and provides specialized care to patients from Newfoundland.
