Canon's Story
In March 2021, during a short bout of abdominal pain, a mass was found on one of Canon's kidneys. Initially thought to be a playground football injury, close follow up by our team at the IWK determined it may be more sinister. In May 2021, Canon had a full left nephrectomy, removing his kidney and the tumor with it. Through collaborative programs set up with the IWK and Children's Oncology Group, a diagnosis of a Stage 1 Wilm's Tumor was made and a plan for treatment was determined.
Canon entered his second surgery within 13 days and a central port was placed. The next day he began a 7 cycle, 24 week chemotherapy regime. Canon was a warrior through his surgeries, hospital stays, pokes, tests, and chemotherapy side effects. Canon had his final round of chemotherapy in Novemeber 2021, and Rang the Bell after his end of treatment scans! In early December he had surgery to remove his central port. We are in awe at his resilience and were grateful that he was able to put some of these big challenges behind him.
We were living through every parent's biggest fear. Through some of the most difficult days of our lives, the team at the IWK and our beautiful community of family and friends held us and made us feel supported.
In 2022 our family leaned on the support of the IWK again as Canon went from an exciting return to regular activities to experiencing debilitating panic attacks a year after his cancer diagnosis due to PTSD from his experience. We learned about the deep and widespread effects of childhood cancer on a family and the need for continued care through the IWK Oncology and Mental Health departments. With their support and much care and understanding, Canon began to thrive and we are relieved again to have our happy, Halloween-loving kid back!
As with many journeys, Canon’s again took a slight bump in July 2022, when another bout of abdominal pain led to a few nights in hospital and an appendectomy. Thank you AGAIN IWK team for having our back (or bellies!)
After an eventful year, and a summer full of paddling, cottaging, and fun with our friends and family, we are once again approaching Canon's most favourite time of year-HALLOWEEN. In 2021 we decided to combine our gratitude for the IWK with our annual House of Doom on Lindenwood celebration. It was an event that brightened our world, and we are ready to do it again!!!!
All are welcome to #enterifyoudare at the House of Doom on Lindenwood this Halloween, a pre haunting will be scheduled the weekend prior to Halloween so stay tuned for exact details, dates, and times
Canon is a warrior for himself and our family, and now, a Warrior for the IWK. The House of Doom is free and all are welcome- We ask that those courageous souls who dare to enter the House of Doom on Lindenwood consider a donation to the IWK Foundation.
The patients and families at the IWK are brave—they are fighters—and it’s our job to help ensure they have access to world-class care when they need it most.
I've become a Warrior for the IWK so that I can stand by those families that need the IWK. Please help me reach my fundraising goal.
Your donation will support the most urgent care needs at the IWK, and make a tremendous difference in the lives of Maritime patients and their families.
As the Maritime region's leading health care and research centre, IWK Health cares for a population of over two million women, children, youth and families throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI and provides specialized care to patients from Newfoundland.
